Humana Health Story
The Humana journey
started in 1961 with a single premise of patient care. It was a dream of 2
lawyers from Kentucky - David A. Jones and Wendell
Cherry, who interestingly had an interest in patient care. They initiated
with a nursing home business with a meager investment of $1,000 and named
it Heritage House and Extendicare. Soon the business
expanded and several hospitals were established in no time. This gave
impetus to the plans of the directors of the company to push Humana, Inc.
as the largest hospital business company in the world by 1980s, when it
owned more than 80 hospitals all over the world. Finally, Humana Health
Insurance Company was formed in 1984 with the initial focus on HMO
plans.
Modern Humana Health
Insurance
With nearly 9 million
members, and a network of over 400,00 doctors, dentists, hospitals, and
pharmacies, the modern Humana Health Insurance is no less than a behemoth
in the US
medical insurance market. The company has more than
18,000 associates who are ever ready to provide healthcare solutions to
the customers in US and Puerto Rico. The
company is especially known for its innovative approach in
consumer-oriented affordable healthcare products.
Humana and Social Welfare
Humana has a strong
sense of community development and believe in donating time, talent and
money to the revered social causes. The local and community development
programs are never short of sponsorship if Humana is around. Humana Foundation was
formed in 1981 to support charitable activities and programs promoting
social causes with focus on healthcare, education, culture, and disaster
relief. Several programs and charities have benefited from the generous
donations from Humana Foundation. For example, American Red Cross received
$500,000 from the Foundation to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. In
the year 2005, the Foundation contributed $7.27 million to non-profit
organizations and community programs all across the United
States.
