Oxford Health Plans
Story
Oxford
Health Plans was the idea of a native of Minnesota, Stephen F. Wiggins, who used
his extensive experience in the health care industry to start his own
company, Accessible Space, Inc. (ASI) in 1984. It was a not-for-profit
health care organization that provided long-term care for handicapped and
brain-injured people. By mid 1990s, ASI transformed into a leading
midwestern provider of long-term care for the handicapped, with more than
15 facilities in 5 Midwestern States. Wiggins teamed up with Dr. Benjamin
Safirstein and launched Oxford that was
aimed at bringing Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) to New York. Its
continuing exponential results prompted UnitedHealth Group to acquire
Oxford Health Plans in July 2004.
